On Tuesday, Facebook rolled out two security features that will allow users to request one-time passwords while using public computers and also the ability to log out of active sessions remotely.
Not too long ago, Facebook introduced two features that allowed users to download their information and also create groups within their friend's list. After taking care of the information and its sharing aspect, they are now aiming to keep this information more secure.
"First we're launching one-time passwords to make it safer to use public computers in places like hotels, cafes or airports. Second, the ability to sign out remotely can be useful if you log into Facebook from a friend's phone or computer and then forget to sign out." announced Jake Brill, Facebook's Product Manager.
The one-time password feature is being introduced gradually for which users will have to text "opt" to 32665 from their mobile phone; the phone must be configured with user's Facebook account. Once the temporary password is received, it will be valid for a 20 minute session only, after which it will automatically expire. When using a public computer, user's must avoid giving in their passwords because you never know that if the computer is infected with data-stealing malware.
The second feature that allows users to sign out of their account remotely is now available for everyone. A very useful feature that lets the user view all active sessions at once and log-out of it from any computer; those who are in the habit of logging-in their account from various computers and skip the part where they have to sign out, this feature can bring them a sigh of relief.
In the past, Facebook has faced many embarrassing situations where user's privacy was compromised, its refreshing to see them focusing more towards security rather than other not-so-important features.
