Pet Rock: A Multi Million Idea

Posted: 9/23/2010

If you have seen the famous movie Castaway, you'll surely remember Tom Hanks's buddy Wilson, the volleyball. For those who haven't, Wilson was Tom Hanks's only imaginary friend (a volleyball) in a deserted island. Pet Rock is a much older and somewhat similar concept...it is a rock that is your pet.

Back in 1975, Gary Dahl, an advertising executive invented pet rock when he was tired of the whole hassle of keeping an actual pet and also wanted to prove that if you market it right, you can sell just about anything. He made millions by selling a rock with a book of instructions.

Gary started a company called 'Rock Bottom Productions' and acquired rocks from construction companies, he wrote a training manual with instructions on how to train your pet rock, like sit, sleep, do nothing, play dead etc. He convinced his buyers that pet rock will bring more pleasure and comfort than cats, dogs or birds. According to him having a pet is psychological, its the idea of a pet that brings joy and Pet Rock can bring immense joy without any hassles.

Its been many years since its invention, and the fad still continues to exist. Many improvised versions of Pet Rock have come up, you can even get yourself a virtual pet rock. Think Geek sells USB Pet Rock compatible with Windows (XP and 7), Mac (all OS's), Linux or any other operating system. It needs 'no feed, no care and no power'.

And thats not it, you can find detailed instructions over the internet on 'how to make a pet rock leash', 'how to adopt a pet rock', 'how to make a hammock for a pet rock', 'how to paint your pet rock' and many more "professional" tips for your darling pet.

Re-thinking your marketing strategy already? If not, then maybe you must because there can't be a better example than this about 'Marketing It The Right Way".

I think that is a great idea! I heard about the best hanging hammocks for them. Looking into it!
