Understanding Bounce Rate

Posted: 7/14/2010

Google Analytics is one of the best tool for analyzing the performance of your blog or website. Apart from Page Views, Visits, Avg. time on site, Traffic Sources and Top Content, Bounce Rate is an equally important assessment to make.

Particularly for E-commerce sites, because it lets you know that if the visitor to your site finds it interesting enough to stay on for a little longer time. If they don't find what they are looking for, they will leave, resulting in a higher bounce rate for your site. If they are not engaging with your site, they will less likely to buy your products or services.

Define Bounce Rate

Bounce rate is the measurement of the number of people visiting your site and the number of exits from your site after viewing just one page, instead of exploring other sections.

Mathematical way of explaining it is: Dividing the number of bounces with the number of visits to your site during a period of time and multiplying it with 100. But you don't have to worry about calculating it, since it is very prominently visible in the dashboard section of Google Analytics.

Example: Suppose I visit a shop thinking that I will find antique furniture in there, but when I step into the shop I realize that they sell only antique lamps; so I leave without even checking out the lamps, thereby increasing the shop's bounce rate.

Importance Of Bounce Rate

It lets you analyse if you are getting the right kind of visitors to your site, it lets you see and understand if you are reaching out to the audience who are similar to your niche. Here's how:

Higher Bounce Rate: A high bounce rate means that a visitor came to your site, saw it, didn't like it and left.

Lower Bounce Rate: A low bounce rate is good news, 'coz in such a case your visitors like what they see or read and are exploring different sections of your site or blog.

Therefore, in order to improve your bounce rate and subsequently your sales, you must aim at targeting the right audience by participating in various websites, blogs or social networking sites that are similar to your niche. You must also provide internal links in order to lead your visitors to other sections of your site, when you provide external links then ensure that they open in a new window and take as many feedbacks as possible to improve your site.

While there are many ways to lower the bounce rate for your site, but easiest and most successful way is to provide substantial content and keep things interesting within your site.
