For past 2 years sellers on eBay Australia could offer only PayPal as their electronic payment platform; but due intervention from Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) ebay.com.au had to amend this policy.

“Increasing the number of accepted safer payment methods will help eBay develop an enhanced checkout experience in line with industry best practice. The introduction of the two new accepted safer payment methods have been discussed with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), who have welcomed the initiative.” announced eBay on its official site.

On 13th May'10, eBay confirmed that sellers can now choose one of the following payment methods for online transactions:

  • PayPal
  • Paymate
  • Merchant Credit Cards

The new Accepted Payment Policy will be implemented from 14th July'10.

Since 2008, ACCC has been investigating various complaints related to eBay Australia and its subsidiaries, because forcing sellers to offer only PayPal is a violation of Australia's Trade Practices Act 1974.

This is what ACCC had to say about the issue: “The ACCC acknowledges that having PayPal as the only payment provider has the potential to deliver some benefits to users, such as increased buyer protection insurance in certain circumstances. However, the ACCC believes that consumers are in the best position to decide which payment method is most suitable for them.”

Apart from this prominent change, eBay Australia will introduce a local classified listing format from 8th July'10; this format will enable buyers to pick items in person. This will feature will zero down the insertion fee; only a standard final sales fee of 7.9% will be charged, capped at a maximum of $49.95.
