So you have a drawer full of vinyl records, super 8 film, and cassette tapes and you want to preserve and protect them forever. Converting these into digital files makes sense but what are the best products or tools available?
At Fueled, there are a number of us that collect vinyl records and have a few old cassette tapes kicking around. When one of us lost a used cassette tape, we thought it would be a good idea to capture the remaining ones and convert them into digital files.
Below are our top three products to help you do this effectively.
iLP
For converting your Vinyl records, iLP is a great option. Under $100, this turntable connects to your iPhone, iPod, iPad, or computer and directly copies everything onto your device. Use the EZ Vinyl and Tape Converter app, which is included, during the conversion and it'll give you digital access to your records. All of the mp3 conversions are done through iTunes so if you don't currently use it, you may have to download it.
You can also connect it to your computer via the USB output as well as a phono preamplifier via the analog RCA outputs.
DVDs
If you have a super 8 film lying around, maybe it's of an old home movie, you can transfer it to DVD and then to your computer quite easily.
The easiest way to do this is to project your movie onto a white wall and record the movie on your own device, either on your camcorder or even on your iPad – the trick is ensuring that both the projector and the recording device remain still. You'll also need to monitor the speed of the film projection, particularly if you are dealing with a very old movie. Once recorded, simply transfer to your computer or DVD for digital keeping.
However, it would probably be easier to let professionals do it for you. There are services that will convert your old films into digital, for a price of course, but the quality will be much higher.
Tape Express+
If you have cassette tapes lying around, there are a lot of products on the market that will quickly convert your tape into an MP3. One of our favorite products to do this with is called the Tape Express+, a portable tape to MP3 converter. It comes with headphones and a USB adapter.
Simply connect the tape deck to your computer via the USB adapter and your music will be sent to the computer and immediately converted into MP3 files, ready for use on your iPod or other music listening device.
We love this product because it's under $100, making it extremely cheap to convert your old music tapes to MP3.
These are our top 3 best products for media conversion. We'd love to know what you use, leave a comment below to let us know what you think the best conversion product out there is.
