1. Skype
Skype's office in Palo Alto was designed by Design Blitz, and it is colourful, creative and contemporary.Skype wanted its office to reflect its innovation, and in its design it has incorporated a number of interesting features. These include mobile white boards throughout the office for informal meetings, freestanding pods, and even relaxing areas complete with rocks and fake grass.
The immediate impression is of a space that is creative and elegant but highly functional and productive, which is surely the intention behind the design.
2. Google
Google's London office is 160,000 square feet of fun. At least, that's the impression Google is hoping to give off to prospective employees.
Designed by Penson Group, it is a £1 billion, 11-storey space in King's Cross complete with climbing wall, indoor football pitch, rooftop pool, dance studio, Union Jack flags, allotments, gym, cafĂ© and more.
Communal areas in various styles – such as the Granny Flat complete with old-fashioned furniture and wallpaper – provide fun and comfortable areas to share ideas. Recycled and reclaimed materials are used throughout, and laptops are always nearby to capture bursts of inspiration.
Through its office, Google is projecting itself as a dynamic company to work for, ensuring that its employees look forward to going to work and want to spend time there.
3. Twitter
Twitter's San Francisco office is different from Google's in that it has focused on something altogether simpler. It still boasts unique and fun features like a yoga studio and a rooftop garden complete with beautiful views, but the overall effect is one of elegance and sustainability.
One of the most interesting features of the office is its location. Twitter moved into Mid-Market in June 2012, heralding a change in fortune for the area. Whereas it used to be a run-down and undesirable area of San Francisco, Twitter's arrival in the Art Deco building– encouraged by a tax break – has seen other companies like Spotify and Yammer move into the area, which has now been renamed Central Market.
Twitter's arrival has therefore led to the redevelopment of an entire area. The influence of the office goes beyond its interior, highlighting Twitter's reputation as an influential company.
