It has been more than a year since Facebook first launched its Facebook Poke app and honestly speaking, this app is already in the app graveyard of all forgotten apps.

Call it one-of-its-kind but Facebook Poke app is very similar to the photo-messaging app, Snapchat.

For those who have used both the apps they would find resemblance between the two, one major resemblance that both the apps let the users send and view pictures and videos that self destruct within a few seconds; Facebook Poke - you can set a limit of 1, 3, 5 or 10 seconds and Snapchat - you can set any limit between 1 and 10 seconds.

If you are wondering if the Facebook Poke app is an exact copy of Snapchat then here are a few pointers that'll help you decide:
  1. The Facebook Poke app lets users sent messages, photos and videos to friends and at the same time also poke them whereas Snapchat only lets users sent photos and videos to friends.

  2. One thing which is pretty unclear is whether Facebook Poke keeps the images on the Facebook's servers because Snapchat on the other hand Snapchat deletes the images from its servers as soon as the recipient is done seeing them.

  3. Another difference between the two is Facebook Poke connects you with only your Facebook friends whereas Snapchat lets you connect with not only your Facebook friends but you can also find more friends through the app.
These are just a few but some major differences between the two apps. But the sad thing here is that within a few months of its launch, the Facebook Poke it fell flat on its face. This fall was already foreseen, reason pretty obvious - when Facebook launched its built-in-about-12-days Poke app, Snapchat was already a HIT.

If the reports are to be believed Snapchat grew in market share from December '12 to January '13 after Facebook Poke's launch and currently this is their position on the charts:

I tried comparing Facebook Poke's activity with that of Snapchat's but the Facebook's app didn't even show-up in the list. Sad!

Talking about Snapchat as a 2-year-old company, when it rejected Facebook's offer to buy it out everyone was shocked. Apparently, it was expected that Evan Spiegel (Snapchat's co-founder and CEO) would sell the company out so when he rejected the offer people called him crazy but according to him his company's worth is even more than what Facebook had offered.

According to what Spiegel told Forbes in an recent interview, "There are very few people in the world who get to build a business like this. I think trading that for some short-term gain isn't very interesting."

According to the interview, Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg approached Spiegel first at the end of 2012, when he personally flew out to meet him in his hometown and told Snapchat's founders that Facebook in the days to come would soon be releasing it's own copy of Snapchat. "It was basically like, 'We're going to crush you,'" recalls Spiegel.

Well, we know what happened to Facebook Poke!

If you ask me I'm often confused with Facebook, I mean what is Zuckerberg actually trying to do here, is he really losing his cool and fears that Snapchat is a threat to Facebook and is therefore, trying his best to clip its wings or he loves buying out company?
