A group of scientists in China have invented the world's first lightbulb, called Li-Fi, that emits Wi-Fi signal.

This new technology was developed at Fudan University in Shanghai. Though the scientists, currently, have only developed its prototype but Li-Fi has already stirred curiosity and great discussions in the tech-fraternity.

People all over the world are amazed just like us and this is mainly because of the fact that this technology is  totally out-of-the-box and was never thought of.

Li-Fi comprises of LED lightbulbs equipped with a microchip that emit Wi-Fi signals to nearby computers. And in case you are wondering how efficient it is, you'll be surprised to know that the experts claim that Li-Fi works better than an average wireless internet connection in China.

According to Chi Nan, an information technology professor with Shanghai's Fudan University,
"Four computers under a one-watt LED lightbulb may connect to the Internet under the principle that light can be used as a carrier instead of traditional radio frequencies, as in WiFi."

Li-Fi is not only an easy to use, fast and efficient technology but is also cost effective.

Chi also shared"Wherever there is an LED lightbulb, there is an Internet signal. Turn off the light and there is no signal."

The scientists would be unveiling 10 sample lightbulbs and their accompanying kits at the International Industry Fair in Shanghai that is to be held on 5th November.

Li-Fi in indeed one fantastic invention of our time and would definitely develop developing countries

If you're wondering how Li-Fi works then I got three words for you 'piece of cake'. All that you have to do is switch on the lightbulb. The internet speed is upto 150mbps which is just wow!

This technology is still yet to see the dawn of reality but once its out, its going to make our lives so easy. I already can't wait to start using it!

This invention is not that new! I saw it demonstrated on Ted talks about a year ago! It wasn't demoed by anyone Chinese either! I think it was presented by the guy who invented it but he talked about how it worked and how it could be made to give wifi coverage anywhere you could think of putting a light source so cities would have near 100% free wifi coverage via a very light infrastructure foot print cos they're light already and all that's needed is to change the lightbulb for one with this design!

    Hi Andrew,
Thanks for sharing this information with us. We had no clue that this invention is a year old but it surely is of great use. Imagine the possibilities!
