Follow these simple tips to improve your social media writing skills or break into a social media career.

Social media writers are in demand nowadays. This isn't surprising given the current statistics. Some would be happy to note that social media has now overtaken porn as the number one activity on the net. When it comes to social networks, Facebook is still leading the pack. Facebook active users now number close to one billion, and Hubspot says 70% of business-to-consumer marketers have acquired a customer through the behemoth social networking site. Over on Twitter, Business Insider says that over 83 percent of users expect a same-day response from customer service.

Meanwhile, the number of users accessing the Internet through mobile has shot up to 60.3 percent, or roughly about 818.4 million, in the past two years. Obviously, social media has become a highly important area when it comes to corporate communications, and companies have become wiser in investing on their social media talents. If you wish to break into a social media career or simply want to improve on your social media skills, try following these tips:
  1. Follow the social media and marketing gurus and learn from them. Some say that you shouldn't advertise yourself as a social media guru or expert. But there are recognized social media ninjas out there. You'll know who they are through their content: authentic, original, and relevant. A few influential voices to follow are: Jeff Bulas, Mari Smith, Pam Moore, Kristi Hines, Seth Godin, and Guy Kawasaki. You can also follow influential blogs such as Social Media Today, Social Media Examiner, and Copyblogger.

  2. Learn SEO. Search Engine Optimization is important for any type of Internet content development. If you want to be an effective social media writer, then you need to have at least a basic knowledge of how search engines work in order to make your content searchable. Presently, search engines equals Google, so learn what makes Google tick.

  3. Mind your grammar. Grammar is still as important today as when you were sitting in your third-grade grammar class. It's what makes your blogs and posts sound professional.

  4. Become skilled in Wordpress. Your blog is a powerful voice in social media. Relevant posts on blogs get discussed and shared. One of the most popular blogging platforms nowadays is Wordpress, and it's recommended to register your blog on this site. Optimize your content not just for search engines but also for the people who will be engaging with it.

  5. Be authentic. People want to engage with people, not with faceless companies. What makes you stand out in the sea of social media writers is your unique personality. Let this personality shine through the tone and choice of words in your writing. However, learn also to temper aggression and negativity with wisdom and respect.

  6. Volunteer to handle a social media page. The best way to improve your skills is to put whatever existing skills you have into practice. If you're just a beginner in the social media space, you can start out by volunteering your services to a start up or non profit. While you may offer your skills for free, the lessons you learn can be invaluable.
Social media can be a fulfilling and rewarding career. Apply these tips, and you can improve your social media prowess.
