Foursquare is the best way for those businesses to reach nearby customers. In our ad pilots over the past year, we’ve been honing our targeting technology, using the same algorithm that powers our Explore recommendation engine.

In the latest update for the small business community, using Foursquare for advertising just became even more attractive. Their blog informs that the company is looking to help businesses, especially small and medium ones, "drive traffic to their stores".

The geo-spotting social network on Tuesday introduced a self-serve ad service that facilitates small businesses to reach out to their target market. Viewing Foursquare's yearly report card, it has been busy with quite some industry acquisitions. Just last month, the firm undertook the preview of a native Windows 8 app, revamped their iOS and Android app by allowing users to check-in their friends as well as updated their search function.

With a registered 35 million users currently, the latest move supporting businesses is in tune with the firm's monetisation plans following its "Promoted Updates" earlier this year. According to the program, some New-York based small businesses were offered their Explore-based service ads. The new addition implies that now advertisers can promote their ads to users in a particular area informing about the local business upon recommendation by friends. The advertisers will only be charged when the users actually visit in person or view their business in the app list.

The ads are limitedly available to a few listed small businesses in the U.S, U.K , Turkey, Brazil and Russia as of now. For those looking to try out their hand at Foursquare for business expansion can easily sign up with the site.

As of now Foursquare has nearly 1.4 million small businesses from across the world who use its services but with this latest strategy, a lot many local enterprises will be interested to promote themselves to a larger audience easily. Moreover, it is a good move by Foursquare to garner revenues from millions of small businesses who will be made happy by this cost-cutting endeavor rather than the handful of big players who enjoyed a virtual monopoly on the platform earlier.
