Now that the 11th annual Microsoft's Imagine Cup is over and the results have been announced, everyone is left awestruck.

This time the Microsoft's Imagine Cup saw some of the most unique and innovative apps and technologies that left many of us thinking about the so many things that the students of today are capable of doing.

The Microsoft's Imagine Cup is the world's premier competition for students who love technology, that challenges them to create innovative and original software applications.

There are three competition categories - Games, Innovation and World Citizenship and the results are announced according to each category. And there are also some additional awards for the finalists. The competition happens first in local and online level and then the finalists compete in the worldwide finals, which was this year hosted in Russia. The students work in groups and can win prizes upto $50,000. This year 87 student teams from 71 countries participated in this competition. The results were announced last week and we'd like to congratulate this years winners and wish them all the best for all of their future endeavors.

This year the competition saw some rather out-of-the-box concepts and we thought of mentioning some of them on our blog. So here's a list of some of the most unique student inventions presented at the Microsoft's Imagine Cup. Have a look:

1. soundSYNK


soundSYNK is a mobile phone app which was developed by Team Colinked from the UK. soundSYNK allows the user to create an Impromptu Social Network by connecting phones through bluetooth/wifi/wifi direct and is a completely new approach to a form of mesh networking!

This one app is something that most of us are dying to use.

soundSYNK won the first place prize of $50,000 in the Innovation competition.

2. For a Better World


A highly useful product that determines blood type in just 5 minutes.

The prototype was developed by Ana Ferraz from Portugal and would be helpful in emergency situations as the responder can quickly determine which blood type to use for the transfusion. The technology is low-cost, portable and can be used on any Windows 8 device.

Ana won the first place prize of $50,000 in the World Citizenship competition.

3. Omni-Hearing Solution


Omni-Hearing Solution is an app-centric hearing aid for people that ensures full hearing ability.

Omni-Hearing Solution was developed by Team Omni-Hearing Solution from Taiwan and is a three-fold: it's a smart phone app to replace a traditional hearing aid; a cloud service to identify your potential hearing problem; and a sound processing technology to enhance the quality of all forms of vocal communication.

The Omni-Hearing Solution team won the second place prize of $10,000 in the World Citizenship competition and also took home the second place prize of $8,000, Women's Empowerment Award.

4. Matibabu


Matibabu is a Windows Phone Application that diagnoses malaria without the need of taking blood samples.

Matibabu was developed by Team Code 8 from Uganda and was competing in the World Citizenship competition.

All you have to do is to connect matiscope to your Windows phone and you'll be able to diagnose and check the malaria status in just few minutes. The results would then sent to the your skydrive for medical record keeping and would also be shared with your  personal doctor.

Matibabu won the first place prize of $12,000, Women's Empowerment Award.

5. SkyPACS


SkyPACS is a solution designed to serve as a  management tool, storage and communication system of Medical Image such as MRI and/or CT. It was developed by Team MYRA from Thailand.

It is expected to be an alternative tool for the radiologist by introducing the simplicity of diagnosis and management process. The system provides 3 major components to cover the medical diagnosis process which are case management, 2D Viewer and 3D Viewer. 

SkyPACs can be used as both a web and Windows 8 application.

Team MYRA won the third place prize of $5,000 in the Innovation competition.

6. Modern Drug Test


Modern Drug Test is a much required app. It can be used to check if a person is under the influence of drugs. All that you have to do is hold your Windows phone up to someone's eye and the app would let you know if the person has taken drugs or not.

Modern Drug Test was developed by team WeRule from Poland and is based on the scientific research on the effects of drugs on the human eye.

Team WeRule won the second place prize of $5,000 in the Windows Phone Challenge.

7. SANO


Team Sano from Canada has designed the SANO app.

This app is the answer to one of the most important problem that we are facing in our daily life and that is sitting in front of our computers for hours.

SANO keeps track and monitors users health indicators while he is busy using the computer.

When SANO decides the user needs to take a break, it notifies the user that it is exercise time! A 3D virtual trainer appears on the screen and asks the user to mimic the movements so office workers can improve their health. SANO is an expandable system that uses the Kinect for exercise recognition. Users can even make their own exercises using SANO’s exercise builder software and share them with other users. When users want to view their exercise history they can log in to their accounts on SANO’s website and see their history in very simple ways!

The Team Sano won the KFC Russia Award and a prize of  $10,000. The project will be showcased in KFC Russia's flagship restaurant in Moscow.

8. i-Chum


i-Chum is a product for the visually impaired. It'll enable them to lead a normal and productive life.

It provides augmented sensory aids: allowing the visually impaired to experience and comfortably interact with both the physical and virtual environments and animate and inanimate objects within these environments without compromising their safety. i-Chum uses a novel approach to package a combination of sensory techniques together. 

This amazing product has been developed by Team Firebird from Sri Lanka and can be connected to a smartphone or tablet PC with Windows 8 OS and the user would be able to navigate, identify objects, avoid obstacles and do generic reading and writing.

Team Firebird won the Samsung Digital Native Award and a prize money of amount $10,000.
