How many websites do you find, that actually let you do that in a glitch free manner? A handful probably.
Pearltrees is one exception in this case. Founded in 2007 and launched in 2009 by Patrice Lamothe and others at Paris, the site instantly broke the record by having 10,000 registered users instantly. By 2012, the user community grew to as many as 1 million unique visitors per month.
But what does Pearltrees exactly do?
A company that claims to be the first to "provide an exposed interest graph", it is nothing but a highly organized bookmarking tool. Anything from videos, web pages to research links, one can store it as "pearls" in their account. Before heading into details, let us understand the special terms that Pearltrees has proudly introduced.
a. Pearl: A pearl represents a link to a web page. It's more than that, however. It's an interactive object that you can move around your visual map. You can also share it with others who "pearled" the same content and discuss it.
b. Pearltree: A pearltree contains other pearls. The closest analogy is to think of it link a folder that you can use to store pearls/URLs. Like a folder, you can expand and collapse it.
c. Pearling: The act of collecting URLs is called "pearling" content.
Before you start Pearling, you need to sign up for a valid account. Once in place, the app - available only on iOS, allows users to add web pages directly and indirectly, to build what becomes your very own "pearl tree". The Android version is set to be released in June 2013.
As of now Pearltrees's Pearler is compatible on almost all well known browsers such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari and Explorer. The iOS users need to install a "bookmarklet" in addition to store links systematically.
One can add pearls, by simply copying a URL from the Web and click on "add a pearl". To organize it more efficiently, you can click on a second tool bar button, in your homepage, to place it on a specific pearltree that you want to.
In other words, you can manually create new pearls, by using the horizontal window pane at the page's botton with buttons that hand out details about the pearls

A pop up window appears where you give the branch a name of your choice. Moreover, it shows detailed information about which other account holders are interested in the topic besides online discussions going on that you can participate in as well.
For example, when you are looking for a certain topic. Just enter the keywords in the "discovery mode". The relevant results will appear for you to choose from.
In addition, the app allows users to share, copy, paste or rename the interesting content on various social media platforms including Twitter and Facebook. Interestingly, while navigating to various web pages on a specific topics, the users are never lost. The "prev" and "next" buttons allows easy surfing while the a toolbar at the bottom of the page helps get back to the home page.
The app has a nicely configured notification functionality. Be it when your pearls are "picked" by someone else, a team up request comes by or new additions by existing members are made etc. Depending on how one wants to receive these feeds, the user can also opt for a email notification.

However, one major drawback of Pearltrees so far has been the privacy factor. The company founders share the opinion that the web is an open platform for interaction and thereby the site has minimal privacy settings since 2012. Those with premium accounts are a little more privileged in the sense that they get to create private pearltrees and limit the sharing with specific persons.
Last week, some fabulous new changes were introduced. Pearltrees latest version is called as Asimov. The major redesigned updates are as follows:
a. New Interface - The latest UI has a new full screen adaptable for all platforms. In addition, it enables users to self guide their actions i.e features appear only when needed. The latest in-app browser enables better search while the induction of dock facilitates organization of collectibles.
b. Advanced And Premium Accounts - The three new plans : Personal ($2.99/ month), Advanced ($4.99/month) and Professional ($9.99/month) allow individuals, teams and businesses to organize, archive their web searches with customized privacy set up options.
So get set to "Cultivate Your Interests" the way you want to.
