This is what parents and teachers profess while trying to cultivate the art of reading in a kid. But here's an artist who just flipped the saying by his creativity.
Richard Tuttle is a well known name in the art circle known for his minimalist artworks. With a wide range of artistic interests like media, sculpture, painting, drawing, printmaking, and artist's books to installation and furniture, Richard has been tagged as the "artist's artist" for inspiring the contemporary generation of artists.
With a generation of laurels, awards and installations in art museums globally, we found Tuttle's book cover art series interesting to share on our blog.
What Tuttle has done in this project is to literally interpret the classic book titles to create a one-of-a-kind book cover. He says "I make literary artifacts. They are designed to pull books down off the shelf and display them in the salon, gallery or home as if they were works of art, which, of course, they are".
Of all his beautiful creations, I personally liked the cover of "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe. The artist has taken a hardbound copy of this timeless poem collection from the 1995 Folio society edition and bound it in black colored goat leather boards. This makes it a stand alone book display stand also.
Richard adds, "Whether binding books with leather, paper, paint, wood, and found artifacts or building sculptures to encase the volumes, I seek to find a perspective that shouts a piece of the essence of the literary work. I try to put myself in the author's or character's minds to say something about the time it was written in; the attitude that is explored and expressed; the magic that makes it a work of art".
Here are some his incredible book cover sculptures. It certainly seems tempting to pick-up these beautiful books off the rack and lounge around in the sun day long...
