Seen that, done that too!
But 3Doodler, probably the world's first 3D printing pen, is garnering much attention as Kickstarter announced that the campaign has achieved its $30,000 funding goals within a few hours of its launch. At present, the project has 1700 backers with 33 days still to go before the campaign closes.
An initiative of WobbleWorks, a robotic toy company founded in 2011, developed the idea for those who "can scribble, trace or wave a finger in the air".
Coming onto professionals, even they find investing in a quality 3D printer as a dig in their pockets. The main premise of this 3D pen is to supplement the same function as the printer but in a cost-effective framework. Loaded with ABS or PLA plastic- the same material used in traditional 3D printers, it allows freehand drawing to be printed in a 3-dimensional space with ease.
The essence of technology at work is that the plastic solidifies instantly after taking to the surface. It works on a simple power connection with no computer back-ups or SD card wit design files. The possible drawback is that the pen's 3mm nozzle is pliable to heat up at 270 degrees or 518 Fahrenheit. So its best to keep it away safely from a child's reach.
If the fundraising campaign goes like now, the first shipment of 3D pens will likely be out by September. According to Kickstarter, those pledgers who reach the $50 mark besides the others, the deliveries will be out latest by October.
Moreover, the host company is collaborating with artists and Etsy to showcase the pen's working. To further help out those doodlers who are not naturally born with an artistic hand but would love to indulge, stencils to carve out intricate designs will be soon outFor those of you afraid of getting caught in the technical working and handling of the 3D pen, here is a video to clarify all those lingering thoughts.
