Road rage and accidents have become so commonplace that reading about it in the papers or news coverage hardly evokes the same kind of reaction anymore.

But can we compromise on safety or give up travelling or abstain from buying that latest bike in the showroom?

Absolutely not!

Well now you bikers can light up your own lanes anytime, anywhere for a smooth ride. Believe it or not the laser technology is one of the most valuable human inventions, often underrated. From eye surgeries to cancer treatments to now keeping cyclists safe at night, laser has extended its usability into areas unknown.

If a study by the Cochrane Collaborative is to be observed deeply, "Night cycling is 2 to 5 times more dangerous than cycling in daylight... and 40% of fatalities occur during the hours of darkness." Added to this the late arrival of help leads to a higher mortality figures.

Keeping this safety aspect in perspective an innovative team of designers- Frank Guo, Stuart Morrow and Hung Wang, have attempted to bring an LED, laser-based bike.  Named as the Bike Zone, the laser beams fall on the  street floor as a warning to fellow motorists. Moreover, the user can also work out with the local area traffic teams to project a "safety area"- a triangle that forms on either side of the rider as well as indicating the direction the biker plans to take.

Based on the "magnetic coupling system" to mount the laser beams onto the handlebars, its pretty easy to install. But be sure to not park your bike with the Bike Zone system on, you could be mugged! To ensure this, the design is such that the system can be sliced into half when not in use.

Jokes apart, the design is still in its pilot stage, due to be launched soon enough. But the designer trio were adjudged the Bronze medal winners at the prestigious 2012 Lite-On Awards. This competition is sponsored by Taiwan's $16 billion dollar Lite-On Technology Corp, recognizing sustainable and innovative technological inventions every year.
