Before RIM could launch its Blackberry 10, Apple came out with its iOS 6.1. An update which contains improvements and bug fixes. Well, no one knows who between the two is suffering from an identity crisis, but one thing we're sure about is that this both of them are here to stay for sometime.

Last September, just after the launch of its iPhone 5, Apple launched iOS 6.0 with an improved Siri, Facebook integration, full-screen Safari, FaceTime usage over cellular networks and the controversial Apple Maps.

Earlier this week, Apple released iOS 6.1 for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, with some minor changes and fixes. This update primarily includes expanded LTE support for more carriers, new support for ordering Fandango movie tickets through Siri in the US, iTunes Match improvements and a few changes here and there.

If you haven't yet installed the iOS 6.1 update then you can easily install it from the Settings - General - Software Update or update your OS via iTunes. Here is a list of improvements and changes that the iOS 6.1 update has brought along:

Expanded LTE Support

The iOS 6.1 update has unlocked LTE capabilities for 36 new iPhone carriers and 23 new iPad carriers worldwide Now you can browse the web, stream content, or download a movie at blazing-fast speeds.

Ordering Fandango movie tickets through Siri

iOS 6.1 users can now easily purchase movie tickets through Siri. You just need to install the Fandango app which is a movie ticketing app. Well currently, this feature is only available in the US.

iTunes Match Improvements

For those who missed the downloading individual tracks feature in iOS 6.0, this iOS 6.1 update is just for you. Though a minor improvement to iTunes Match but now you can once again download individual tracks. In iOS 6.1, each individual track has an iCloud download icon that can be used to fetch the track from the cloud and download it to your iOS device.

With iOS 6.1, you can easily delete any individual track by swiping left-to-right on it. Well, this feature only works when you are viewing the track in the standard track views. When you are swiping left-to-right on an individual track, you will get an option to remove it. There's another minor change which is related to the Music app, the playback controls are now given a metallic look,  in both the Music app and on the lock screen.

Passbook Apps

After the iOS 6.1 update, Apple's built-in Passbook app once again has its Welcome screen that explains users what it does and it also provides a link "Apps for Passbook" that takes users to a special page in the App Store listing those apps that are compatible with Passbook.

Advertising Identifier

In iOS 6.0, Apple replaced the unique device identifier (UDID) with Advertising Identifier. Developers and advertisers used UDID to track specific devices for features such as ad targeting. Earlier, users used to disable the Advertising Identifier. But with the iOS 6.1update, has added a button that can be used to reset the Advertising Identifier. So now users who don't mind targeted ads can "start over" again with a new unique advertising ID.
You can find this button under Settings - General - About - Advertising.
Well, this iOS 6.1 is just a minor update but it's pretty useful for the users. In fact, just after being launched, iOS 6.1 is already being used by nearly 22% of users, according to the data collected by Onswipe. According to TechCrunch, "Onswipe, creators of touch templates for web-based content, have seen adoption of iOS 6.1 rise quickly, from 11.35 percent within the first 24 hours, to 16.92 percent this morning, and up to an impressive 21.81 percent as of 3 PM ET today" (Wednesday).

So far, the iOS 6.1 is the only OS update by Apple that people have quickly adopted. One thing that we are sure about is that this update is here to stay for some time, until Apple launches iPhone 5S or iPhone 6.
