All it takes is one great idea and they came up with one that has seen them grow from strength to strength. All it took was a catapult and some irate members of the flying mammal family.
Angry Birds has become a global phenomenon, and looks to show no signs of slowing its ascent into the mainstream since its appearance on the iPhone in 2009.
If you’ve been living in a cave for the last few years, Angry Birds has a very simple set-up; it’s a slingshot puzzle game where birds are used to knock over structures.
Since its debut, the original has been released onto Android and has been downloaded over 1 billion times. It accounts for more than a quarter of total downloads and is one of the highest selling games in Apples App Store.
Keeping it going
Due to their success, Rovio Entertainment has since managed to raise over $40 million dollars in funding for various ventures.
And although other versions of Angry Birds have appeared, such as Angry Birds: Rio and season specific versions focusing on Halloween and Christmas, excitement has grown recently as the Finnish company refuses to rest and its laurels and instead enter into the pop culture zeitgeist.
LucasArts and Rovio have joined forces to create Angry Birds: Star Wars. This collaboration means that the company can tap into the massive resource that are Star Wars fan. The game is compatible with iOS, Android, Windows and OS X, meaning that a cross-platform juggernaut is assured.
In fact, within almost 3 hours of launching, the app hit the #1 spot in the US Apple App Store. This broke all records previously. It seems Rovio know how to use the force.
