Apple Inc. is in the habit of shrouding its upcoming products with mystery. This has the effect of increasing the suspense and anticipation not only for its millions of loyal fans, but for their competitors as well. So far, it has worked rather well. Apple is often touted as a great and innovative company; it’s no happy accident that the company is worth over a hundred billion dollars.

Let’s focus on one particular product line, their critically acclaimed smartphone, the iPhone. Time sure flies when you consider that the first of these phones, the original iPhone, was introduced in September of 2007. For every year onward, they have released a new model, or a slight refresh of the previous model (storage memory upgrade, new colors, etc.), and the iPhone has gained quite a bit of ground in the mobile phone marketplace, with the Android-based smartphones (Samsung being one of the biggest) being it’s only true rival in dominance.

When Apple announced a September 12 press release, everyone was excited. It was within everyone’s expectations; the iPhone 5 was going to be introduced. Apple needed to make a big impression on their latest product. One objective might be to nip the growing perception that Samsung was going toe-to-toe with the tech giant from Cupertino when it came to smartphones (the current Samsung smartphone flagship, the Galaxy S III, was bigger and more powerful than the current iPhone 4S).

People Are...

Let’s go a little off-topic and watch a little “experiment” by Jimmy Kimmel. It’ll help us readers get the proper lulzy mindset to read the rest of this piece, too.

Now, the iPhone 5!

You’ll probably have no problem finding an iPhone 5 review on the intarwebs (search engines are your friends). What I’m more interested in are the humorous reactions to an Apple iPhone release. Usually, people just love the new product, hate it (too expensive, too pretentious, just a status symbol, etc.), or don’t give it much thought. Now, some people are having a good laugh at Apple because of the iPhone 5, or more specifically, the direction they appear to be going with their products. Extrapolation and length-based humor, anyone?

Apple’s Rep and My Take

Apple and its fans already have a bit of a damaged reputation with their cult-like behavior, but it’s all well and good; everyone’s got his or her own fandoms and convictions. Recently, Apple got  even more negative publicity over suing Samsung for allegedly copying design elements from their products (reading the rest of the wiki will tell you that they’ve been doing this for quite some time now). Yes, there are lulzy pictures about that, too.

Poking fun at people and things are a staple in the Internet, but I think that this is a chink (a very small one, so far) in Apple’s armor. The recent events portray the company to be a little threatened over the emergence and persistence of the competition, and their most recent smartphone seems to have come up short (pardon the pun) against a competitor’s product that has been out in the market for a few months now.

The way I see it, Apple needs to sue less and innovate more. They got where they are through releasing products and services that entertained and made things convenient for a lot of people, tech-savvy and luddite alike. People were expecting a lot from the release of this latest iPhone;  alas, nothing groundbreaking, just another incremental update.

I really expected more out of you, Apple. Well, at least you have given me and a few million people out there at least a good month’s worth of laughs. For those who really have no need for a smartphone (I suspect that’s a majority of the mobile users of the world), I suggest you take a step back from the imbruglio and go with a simpler, easy to use phone for the moment. When the smoke clears, there will definitely be cheaper, consumer-oriented, and drama-free (or less drama, at least) smartphone solutions for all of us.
