Social networking is a tricky business, relying merely on creativity will take you no where.

Don't get me wrong, being creative is of utmost importance, but there are many more factors involved to make your social media strategy work.

Remember, doing everything right might not get you the appreciation or results that you expect, but doing just one thing wrong can do some serious damage. Therefore, when it comes to social networking, it is imperative for you to know 'what not to do'.

Here some of the most common mistakes, although they may seem pretty obvious, but think again! There are many out there unknowingly or ignorantly committing these mistakes.

Being Desperate:

Desperately asking people to 'like' your Facebook page, or follow you on Twitter is a big NO-NO.

Being aloof:

Being unresponsive to questions or comments is another mistake that brands tend to make; it's a very unprofessional behavior.

Lack of planning:

Without planning, you will be like headless chicken running all over the place and getting no where. Think-Strategize-Organize and see how things work in your favor.

Talking without listening:

Conversations are a big hit in social networking. Merely broadcasting will not do, listen to what to others have to say and respond accordingly.

Lack patience:

This is one of the most common mistake made by brands who expect quick results and get frustrated when they don't get it. Networking takes time, and when it does, it brings far more substantial and lasting results.

Too much content:

Quality will always get appreciated over quantity, don't get carried away by thinking that more content will bring you success. Remember, sometimes less is more.

Unreal expectations:

Keep it real! Having high (and unreal) expectations will only make you feel demotivated. Dream big, but keep your goals achievable.

Mob Mentality:

Although it is important to adapt oneself to the latest trends and keep up with peers and competitors. But what works for other brands might not work for you. Try to be unique and of course, creative.

Blocking negative comments:

This is another major mistake that brands make. When someone says something bad about your service or product, think of it as an opportunity. Deleting such comments will only be perceived as lack of confidence and professionalism from your end.

Stalking:

Don't always be after your fans or customers, don't email them all the time, don't retweet them all the time and definitely not call them all the time. Maintain reasonable distance and give them a chance to come to you.

Getting too personal for comfort:

While it is recommended to connect with your fans and customers on a personal level, but they don't need to know about your baby's pooping habits or annoying your neighbor is. Maintain a balance and thereby your reputation.

I am sure other than these common ones, there are many more mistakes made by brands, if you have learnt some valuable lesson from personal experience, then do share it in the comment section below.
