It's quite evident that these pencil sculptures by Jennifer Maestre are inspired by sea urchins. but what's more interesting is a story that makes Jennifer's inspiration all the more alluring. She'd always wanted to build a box shaped like a sea urchin, and very much like the animal itself, it was to have a defense mechanism, with a secret compartment that could only be opened after pulling one of the urchin's spine. "The idea was of something beautiful, sculptural, but that you wouldn't necessarily want to touch, and that also held a secret treasure."
And that's when she started experimenting with different materials to create things that resemble sea urchins. And after working with nails, small metal, glass and other pointy things, she settled for pencils. Check out her beautiful sculptures below:
