Few weeks back we'd featured top 3 tools for conducting surveys online; other than Survey Gizmo and Qualtrics, Polldaddy was one of them. While Survey Gizmo and Qualtrics are both excellent and very professional tools, but if you want to conduct a not-so-extensive and quick survey or poll on your website/blog, then we suggest that you should give Polldaddy a try; specially if you are doing it for the first time.

Polldaddy is a very widely used tool and one of the major reasons behind it is that it's incredibly simple. You can choose from a wide variety of features available, and if you are looking for conducting basic or fun surveys, then a free account with Polldaddy will be more than enough.

Very soon we will be conducting our very first survey and we would like to share our first experience with Polldaddy with you. But first, let's have a look at its features that made us choose this tool:

  • Conduct Surveys in form of multiple choice questions, free text or Likert Scales (psychometric scale).
  • Create simple one question polls and publish it to your website/blog using a single code. You can also customize and make it look beautiful using various sizes, fonts, colors or images.
  • You can display your surveys in form of articles, slider pop-ups, buttons or banners.
  • Take an online quiz for your employees or customers and add some fun to your site.
  • Get your content rated by your community by simply adding five-star ratings or Nero rating widgets to your articles, images, videos, comments or just about anything.
  • Use your iPhone or iPad to survey customers, employees or random people on-the-spot.

Here's how we took our first step towards conducting online surveys:

Create Your Account

Name, username, email id and password is all you need to create a new account; it hardly takes a minute.

Once your account is created, you will be taken to your dashboard.

And that's it, you are all set to create your very first online survey.

Click on 'Create a new' button and choose if you wish to conduct a:

  • Survey
  • Poll
  • Quiz
  • Ratings

The first thing that we tried was polling, although we will be conducting a survey...but it's kinda fun to play around with it.

We chose to start a new poll, this is what you will see:

All you need to do now is type your poll question and options. You can enable or disable 'multiple selections' for your poll, you can also give your audience the choice to add a new answer. You can even add images (png, jpeg and gif) or audio files for each option.

Every blog or website has a theme and design, and you can't just go ahead and display any random stuff out there. Polldaddy first gives you 20 poll styles to choose from, and if that doesn't work for you, you can always customize it as per your liking. Even if you are using one of their poll styles, you can choose from three different widget sizes available:

  • 150px (mostly used for sidebars)
  • 300px (general)
  • 630px (mostly used for blog posts)

  • You choose to set up a closing date for your poll, hide results from the participants or let them see the results in percentage or the entire voting results.
  • You can block repeat voting, and also allow voters to add comments; moderation of comments is also available.
  • You can add a share button to your poll, allowing voters to share or email your poll's link within their network.
And that is all you need to do. Your poll is now ready to be shared on your blog or website. Other than providing a JavaScript for your poll, Polldaddy gives you codes and links for sharing your poll on various platforms:
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • WordPress
  • Direct Link
  • Posterous
  • MySpace
  • Ning
  • Flash Poll Email
Since we use Blogger's platform, we simply copied the JavaScript:

You have two options here:
  • Inline (it can be included in your blog post)
  • Slider Pop-up (you can use this for your homepage)
Once you copy the code, click on 'done sharing' and checkout the results through your Dashboard; you can always edit your poll anytime you want.

This is how our sample poll looks like in a blog post:

And here's how a slider pop-up looks like:

Conducting polls is one of the many things that you can do with Polldaddy. Surveys is perhaps the most popular feature here, and it is as easy as polls. You can display buttons, widgets or pop-ups for your survey, clicking on which opens overlay window.

But first, take polls for a spin, and trust me once you get started you will get hooked on to it.

Do share your feedback or views with us.

You should also look at WebEngage sometime - http://webengage.com. An easy way to conduct short targeted surveys on your website. Not only does it let you conduct surveys on your website, but it also lets you "target" your survey to a specific audience. E.g. only for visitors coming to your site via Google search, only for visitors to your site's pricing page and spending at least 30 seconds there etc.

Disclosure: I am Avlesh - co-founder and ceo at WebEngage.
