Iain Findlay, has come up with a smart gardening solution for those living in urban areas with limited space. An invention that enables you to grow your plants vertically rather than horizontally.

"The Whirligro makes growing food herbs and flowers easier for people who lack space and can be used in gardens, on balconies, decking, flatroofs or anywhere. The plants grow in compost/soil in durable growing tubes." explains their website.

"The Whirligro is made up from individual growing tubes, each one holding 3 plants. Each Whirligro holds 10 tubes, spiralling around a central post...that's 30 plants in an area under 1m by 1m. Each plant grows through a hole in the plastic tubing so that the only area that ever needs weeding is a couple if inches wide. And if you use new compost, without any weed seeds, you will never have to weed at all."

The reason why it perfectly fits in the urban lifestyle is that it is incredibly convenient and hassle-free. Firstly, it hardly occupies any space, secondly, one can easily water their plants using a regular watering can or automated drip irrigation system. Also, since it is away from the ground, the possibility of infestation reduces considerably.

Whirligro are of three types: Step 'n Whirligro (ideal for small spaces) for $90, Whirligro Midi (regular size) for about $130, and Whirligro Maxi (big daddy of Whirligro) for $230.

Although I am not a person with a green thumb, but I am sure those with a keen interest in gardening will find this intriguing. How useful and practical do you think this product can turn out to be?
