When I first came across Utopic.me, I wondered, why do I need another website to tell me about whats trending and what to read? I already have Twitter, Facebook, StumbleUpon, Google Reader and numerous pending bookmarks that I still have to get over with.

But when I visited the website, their design tempted me to take it for a spin, and I realized that it makes quite a bit sense have one service that integrates everything that my friends and contacts share and like on major social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and even YouTube.

I can browse through most popular links, videos, music, movies and events in real-time. "Automatically collected structures recommendations and top lists from friends. How often have you wished to know, what your friends read, listen to, watch? Until we have to manually rate or like stuff, it will not work. More data must be collected and processed automatically, transparently." shares Utopic;s blog.

What I like most about them is that they let you view what your friends are liking, sharing, listening to or reading, under different categories:

  • Art & Culture
  • Business
  • Entertainment
  • Food & Cooking
  • Funny
  • Mind & Spirit
  • Politics & World
  • Sports
  • Tech & Science
  • Travel & Adventure

To be able to view the topics that you may like, all you need to do is, give Utopic the permission to connect with your Facebook and/or Twitter account (you can add YouTube as well)...and you are good to go. As far as privacy issues are concerned, here's what Juri Kalijundi, co-founder and CEO of Utopic has to say about it:

"We take privcay very seriously, so inside the system, only you see the stuff that has been shared to you on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc. We don't keep really all data about each link you click, just the processed generic data of what types of things you like. For other stuff, it's the same information that's available over FB, Twitter, YouTube API's anyway."

Utopic.me also suggests and lets you choose keywords as per your liking; it also gives you the option to receive daily emails with top links, music, videos, photos and events from your friends.

This startup comes from the folks behind, Talentag, an interesting recruiting app that takes the social route to creating resumes, receiving feedbacks from your friends and co-workers.
