This is a guest post by a really bad blogger who is a victim of some dreadful habits that can ruin your reputation as a blogger and as a person as well. We hope that you will learn from these mistakes.
One day I received an email with 10 different profiles of people claiming to earn thousands of dollars through blogging. These people worked from their comfortable houses and managed to pay all their bills while wearing pajamas all day long and enjoyed life to the fullest. Of course I wanted that too, and that is the only factor that encouraged me to start my own blog.
I had no idea what I was gonna write about, but I did know that it is very important for people to visit my blog and click on those ads. So, I quit my job immediately with the confidence that...'dude even teenagers are doing it, so why can't I?' But little did I know that it is not as easy as it sounds.
I did manage to earn couple of bucks initially, but then with time my readers lost interest and stopped clicking on those ads. What went wrong? I was working on my blog all day long...but without results.
Well, deep inside I did know why...but chose to be ignorant and indifferent. But now the time has come to share these dreadful mistakes that I have been committing knowingly...
I Just Want Money
I am guessing that by now you must've figured out that my sole purpose of blogging is to earn money. I place numerous flashy ads on my blog to make sure that my visitors see them, and also pop-ups with every post. No wonder my bounce rate increased drastically.
I'm Obsessed With My Subscriber Count
I have a compulsive habit of tracking each and every subscriber to my blog, I fuss over it and seeing a dip in the count hugely affects me. I did not realize that rather than obsessing with subscribers, I could utilize this time to build relations with other bloggers and connect with more readers. I always believed that number of subscribers determine the success of my blog, but forgot the importance of quality over quantity.
I'm Also Obsessed With Analytics
I just have to know that number of visitors on my blog every second, the increase of number in that graph gives me a certain thrill, an elated feeling. I have this urge to check out each and every detail of my visitors, including the browser they use...forgetting that it makes more sense to check 'em periodically and not with every breath I take. I may be sounding like an addict here, but I haven't even started yet.
I'm A Social Networking Addict
Someone once told me that social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter can do wonders for your blog, and that was it...I got hooked on to these sites so badly that I forgot all about my blog. I automated updates and started stalking people and pages on Facebook, I follow people on Twitter and unfollow the ones that don't reciprocate.
Sometimes I Don't Proofread
Its not that I am too confident about my writing, but its just that when I am writing I make sure that I use all the right words and proper grammar. And even if I do go wrong, my readers let me know about it, so why proofread?
I Don't Care What My Readers Have To Say
My blog, is for me to do the talking and put my point across, and my readers job is to do the reading and click on those ads that I have strategically placed...that though as per relevance. They do tend to leave couple of comments every now and then, but who has the time to reply, let other readers indulge in the conversation while I can concentrate on writing articles.
I Also Indulge In Harmless Spamming Every Now 'n Then
Since, I am in that whole confessing mode, I have to admit that I do spam sometimes....alright, most of the times. Not that I am proud of it, just that it is much easier to generate traffic this way. I do receive couple of hate emails and some threats...but who cares. If someone doesn't like my spamming their blogs or websites, then perhaps they should consider moderating comments.
I Don't Give Credits To Image & Information Sources
When it comes to images, I simply Google it. Although I have been told that there are several websites that provide royalty free images, but who has the time to go through all that....Google is way easier. And when it comes to crediting the sources, I am the one providing that information on MY blog, why should anyone else get any credit?
I Sometimes Don't Follow My Blogging Schedule
Every body keeps saying that when it comes to publishing articles, every blogger must follow a schedule and uniformity. But then I realized that who has the time to notice that I might have skipped couple of posts in a week or a day...don't they have other things to do?
I Sometimes Plagiarize....sshhhh.....
Alright, I admit that I do plagiarize sometimes, but in my defense...I don't blindly copy paste the entire content; I carefully choose certain lines or paragraphs that I like. Sometimes, I do get caught, and when I do I either remove that content or simply play around with words a little bit.
I Don't Care About The Design Of My Blog Or Format Of My Posts
People say that a good design is the backbone of a good blog, but I say..who cares? I believe that it is the content that draws people (even if it is copied) and not the design, if they really wanna read, they will find a way to navigate around my blog. And as far as formatting is concerned, as long as my words are perfect, format doesn't matter any more.
I Cannot Tolerate Guest Authors On 'MY' Blog
Its my blog, then why should anyone else have the privilege of writing in it? They say that it helps in building relationships with like-minded people and increases viewership...but I say that it is MY blog and only I have the right to post articles there...I don't go asking people to post my articles on their blogs.
I Use My Readers Email Addresses For Shameless Marketing
Since I have a decent database of email addresses of my readers, specially the ones that subscribe to my blog, I figured why not use them for some marketing campaigns. Firstly, my sole motto is to earn money from my blog, and one of the easiest ways to capitalize is through some pushy marketing tactics.
I Don't Believe In Backing Up My Blog & Articles
Back-ups are for people who do not know what it is to live on the edge. I refuse to believe that there is no way to revive your blog if something wrong happens...so why go through the whole hassle of backing up every now 'n then? Although I haven't experienced any glitch yet...but I'll handle it when it happens.
I Hate To Read Boring & Long Emails From My Contact Us Page
Someone told me that I should place a contact us page on my blog, and to my surprise, I took this advice. But little did I know that I will be bombarded with endless emails, concerns, questions, advices, and what not through this page. I confess...I hate reading those boring stuff from people with loads of time in their hands.
So there...my secret is out in the open and I wrap my confessions here with the hope that you learnt something from them.
