1. Hi May! Please introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi,everyone! I am Maysum. I am the first lipstick sculptor in Asia. Besides that, I am also a creative, innovative make-up artist, a multimedia artist ,creative director of wahahafactory, illustrator, with more than 8-year experience in creative media field and working along fashion, photography, art direction, illustration, painting, video and printed materials. I have published a book 'shek kip mei street' in 2009, 'Let Art Bloom - From Art To Makeup' in 2013, and 'Beauty Bible' in 2014.
2. What is 'Wahaha Factory' all about?
I had set up 'Wahaha Factory' In 2006.
Wahaha Factory is an international multi-media creation unit and was established in 2006. Our aim is to promote love and happiness to our partners and readers through creative work. And there is also a deeper meaning with Wahaha Factory. We would like to work out some funny and inspiring work, thus to make Wahaha Factory the most creative workshop.
3. Carvings on lipsticks! What was the inspiration behind it?
Firstly, as a senior make up artist, i should understand about cosmetics thoroughly. But the understanding of cosmetics is not equal to limitation. It is a new breakthrough instead for me. I reinterpreted the meaning of lipstick. Each sculpture made lipstick become an art work. And, each lipstick not only has one meaning but it is a brand-new story.
I have a huge collection of fashion icons. It is because of the project I worked with DFS galleria(a cosmetic brand/shopping mall), after i finished my Asia art tour at Hong Kong and china at 2012.
DFS galleria approach me for a crossover project to celebrate their 1st anniversary at a shopping mall, and they loved my lipstick art and really wanted to invite me to have an exhibition at their shop, for attracting more people.
Since their target costumers are ladies, so i decided to work out an idea about "woman" as my theme of this new lipstick exhibition... that's why the idea come out.
It takes me that long, because they are so easy to melt out, so I have to let them cool down a little bit after that I crave for a hour and then start again. And lipstick is quite small, it is another difficult part for me too... it really needs me to be very focused... my eyes always are like burning... so I have to take some rest, after a few hours too. That is why it takes so long for each work.
I think Facebook and Instagram is quite effective for me because all people from all over the world can fine me.
6. You are a multi-talented person. What would you like to be called, make-up artist, art-director or an illustrator? Choose only one.
I think "artist". As I mainly do art, the only difference is do it on a still object or on model’s face
7. You must have received many compliments. Which one do you cherish the most?
Um... for me... every one supports me in a really encouraging way. I think one of the recent touching one is from a model, she came to Hong Kong for shooting two years before, that is the first beauty shoot she did here, she loves my creative makeup that much... Even after two years, she went to many countries from all over the world, she still thinks I am the best makeup artist in her life... and we just worked together last week and she said, during these two years, she is so looking forward to work with me again... Now it is just like dream come true with her.
For myself... I wish my art can spread to more country, having exhibition at oversea is my dreams.
9. What piece of advice would you like to pass on to aspiring sellers and entrepreneurs?
Be original and be yourself, you will rock it.
Thank you so much Maysum for taking out time and doing this interview with us. It was great to know more about you and your work. We wish you all the best for the future.
