You may be in dire need of some true travel inspiration—or you may be completely lost in London not knowing where you're headed. The good news is that there are probably hundreds, even thousands, of others like you. This is what makes the London iPhone apps such a big market. Whether you're biking, on the London Underground, or catching a bus, your iPhone will always be there to have your back. The English capital has its pros and cons, but it certainly has a handful of resources. London is a major tourist attraction which has caused the iTunes store to be flooded constantly with new and innovative travel apps. But only some of these apps are useful, and here are my top five.

London Cycle

The 8,000 or so Barclays Bikes that have been placed throughout London have become a daily proceeding for the residents of the capital. You'll find an ordinary businessman hop onto one of the bad-boys on the way to work, riding through central London like a typical tourist. Because of this, the London Cycle app has become a must-have for those living close to the city center. If you own a bike yourself, then it's definitely a no-brainer—the app will give you routes and an overview of the city, too. You'll find these bikes rotting during the winter, but come Easter when the sun shines bright over London, you'll be lucky to get your hands on any one of them!

Hailo

The Hailo app is useful all year long, but especially so during half-term and Easter holidays. A black cab happens to be the most difficult to get when you desperately need one; an odd phenomenon, really. Luckily, smartphone owners can download the Hailo app that finds the closest taxi to your location. The app shows you how far your ride is in real-time in their built-in map. You can also get in touch with your cab driver and call him directly. If you're travelling around London often, then this app is a must-have. Do expect delays during rush-hours, though—it's London after all!

TubeMap

TubeMap is one of the best London travel apps in the market today. It's saved me from aby tube-related issues countless times. Without this little gem, navigating through the London Underground can be a nightmare. Now, it's a delightfully easy experience. Forget about trying to figure out quick ways to your stop or how many lines you'll have to change—this app does it all! TubeMap also has real-time service announcements and updates, a route planner, and a station locator. Link your oyster card with your phone and it will show you your updated balance, too.

Vouchercloud

London is expensive—really expensive. It's sad but true. It can be quite tough to have a good time when you're on a tight budget in the capital. Vouchercloud helps to an extent, though. It shows you an array of up-to-date discount vouchers for an endless list of places and activities. Whether it's a restaurant, a pub or a bar, you'll be set if you have this little gem. They even have discounted London hotel deals from different websites such as HotelClub. This one's a must-have, especially for students.

London Bus Checker

The London Underground will be packed during Easter. Forget even trying to get onto the first train passing through Zone 1 on the Central Line. An easier alternative for short-distance commuters are buses. You'll find bus lanes spread throughout the city into Greater London, too. A bus drives amongst traffic, though, and delays are inevitable. Some stops have a fitted digital screen with latest bus arrival timings, but the majority of stops don't. The London Bus Checker app has information about all buses, no matter how small your stop is. You won't have to worry about being late anymore because you can plan ahead using your smartphone. Whether you're a regular commuter or not, this app is essential for anyone in who lives in London.

This is an awesome resource. I have some vacation time
coming up and I’ve been looking around for some last minute travel apps to help
me through London. These are perfect! I
work at DISH and a coworker of mine suggested your website, as she is an
avid traveler as well. TubeMap looks awesome, and so does GVouchercloud.
However, my favorite app for long journeys has to be DISH Anywhere. With it I can use my iPad or phone to watch live or
recorded TV, off my home receiver. As long as there is a wifi or 3G connection
available, I’m good to go, making it perfect for travel. Thanks again for the
    suggestions!
