Most of us may not necessarily agree with the data posted or shared online but how many of us actually articulate our dislike. Sure there is a lot of bad mouthing and ranting that happens. But isn't there an alternative clean way to show disagreement?
Well now there is.
Recently, California-based Jake Banks has come up with a social media app that could supposedly be the 'negative' alter to social media 'likes'. Christened as "Hater", it aptly signifies the purpose. But a lot could go wrong by the name.
Banks has prudently clarified the app's purpose well before time. He explains that “It’s basically like Instagram for everything you hate." However,it is not meant to create an online hate drive. “You might hate something so much you want to change it, which is the complete opposite of what happens when you ‘Like’ something.”
Banks has a history in the comercial advertising industry as an app developer. As Mashable reports, some six months back, Jake sold off his company to pursue development of Hater app after much self-contemplation about the social media scenario today.
The obvious result of this brainstorming was the launch of Hater on iPhones and iTunes this Friday. The app will likely be available on Android soon.
As good as the thought behind behind this app is, it is not the first of its kind. Last year, Facebook supported an app called Enemygraph where people could tag people as enemies rather than passively accept everyone as a friend.
So it all comes down to a user's intent. The real brownie point with this app is that it will allow web surfers to articulate their opinions better. It is like an open button that comes with a choice to pick things that users genuinely like and not pretend to mundane as others.
Coming to the 'Instagram-like' quality of the app, well, the users can share photos on the Hater community. The idea as mentioned earlier is not to take a negative hue but to be "little more self-deprecating and a little more fun".
Taking into account the success of this app, Jake plans to launch an awareness feature in the future- Hate For Good, for those users who believe in rolling out change.
Currently at SXSW to promote his app, Jake also has ideas to turn Hater into a clothes line in the near future. As of now he wants to stick with the app promotion part!
