Today is a very important day in the US history not because it's Martin Luther King Day but also because it's Obama's inauguration.

This is the second time ever that the two days have overlapped and therefore, the fuss! This is the second inauguration for Barack Obama and this inauguration marks the beginning of the second term of Barack Obama as President and Joe Biden as Vice President.

This all clearly means that the country's first black president's swearing-in ceremony would be held on the day which is dedicated to its most famous civil rights activist, Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Day is a federal holiday which is held on the third Monday of January. It celebrates the birth of Martin Luther King Jr., who is well known for his racial equality campaigns in the US.

Martin Luther King headed the anti racial segregation movement in the US. Just like Mahatma Gandhi he was also an advocate of non-violent protest. Martin Luther King Jr. has been an inspiration for many. He was immortalized by his "I have a dream" speech, which he delivered in 1963 in Washington, D.C.

Here are some more inspiring quotes from Martin Luther King. Happy reading!

"In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends."

"Never, never be afraid to do what's right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society's punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way."
