It’s not long till Christmas, and the chances are you still have a few tricky presents left to get. What to get Steve from philosophy, the guy who’s only into films and books that no one’s ever heard of? And what to get your lovely girlfriend, who seems to have everything and hasn’t dropped a single hint? The answer is something esoteric and peculiar that the person in question won’t think of in a million years. I’ve rummaged around in the dustier corners of the internet to bring you five weird and wonderful gift ideas for that special person in your life.
Blood-Spattered Wallpaper
Canned Air from Paris
Dirt Perfume
Bacon Tuxedo
Brick iPhone Case
Rewind 25 years to when the newly-invented mobile phone wasn’t actually that mobile. I’m thinking of the brick-sized yuppie status symbol wielded in the 1987 film Wall Street here. What goes around comes around, and retro phones are back – check out Thumbs Up’s terribly impractical but hilarious brick iPhone case if you don’t believe me. Place your smartphone in the custom slot and you’ll have access to all its usual features while looking like a throwback to another era. It’s true that your phone will no longer fit in your pocket, but some sacrifices have to be made for fashion.
Blood-Spattered Wallpaper
Need to buy an unusual gift for a horror movie buff? Look no further than this rather horrifying blood-spattered wallpaper from Pixer. It’s available in a range of gory designs and several different sizes, making it the perfect gift for someone who wants to scare away all visitors. Just bear in mind that anyone who puts up such wallpaper is making a strong commitment to being a psycho, so be careful who you give it to. That said, in some ways it looks like modern art and would make a brilliant backdrop for some framed horror film posters.
Canned Air from Paris
A can of fresh air from Paris would make the perfect gift for a homesick Parisienne or nostalgic Francophile. Each pot comes with an attractive wine-style label revealing that the air is made up of 20% Louvre and 20% Notre Dame, failing to mention the proportion of traffic pollution or freshly baked baguettes. Canned Air is the brainchild of Prague-based artist Kirill Rudenko and takes its inspiration from the 1987 film Spaceballs where air is in short supply and sold in cans of Perry-air. While our own air is not in short supply, smell is apparently the best way to evoke memories, so this oddball souvenir could be the perfect cure for homesickness in a foreign friend. Canned Air is available in a range of different cities such as New York, Prague and Berlin – although whether it actually comes from there is another question.
Dirt Perfume
What to get the lady in your life that has everything? A bottle of soil-smelling perfume from Demeter, of course! Dirt is just one of a range of ‘singular’ scents from these oddball New Yorkers including Play-Doh, Pipe Tobacco and Crayon (which smells like a pack of freshly opened crayons on your first day of school). Dirt evokes the earthy, fresh smell of rain-drenched soil, and whether that’s a good thing or not is for you to decide. It’s apparently worn by the likes of Clint Eastwood and Kate Moss, which is good enough for me, even if you can smell the same by doing a couple of hours’ gardening.
Bacon Tuxedo
With the bacon fad in full swing, there’s never been a better time to get your friend a pork-related novelty gift. Leading the pack has got to be this suave bacon tuxedo which is made from chemically treated latex and smells like the real thing. Black suits seem so last season when you compare them to this sweet bacon version. Available in four sizes and costing just under $100, it’s the only way to look as dapper as this man in the picture and is perfect for meeting your girlfriend’s parents for the first time. Just don’t wear it to any bar mitzvahs.
