I am no artist, but while browsing through their list I came across so many creative apps that they almost convinced (rather inspired) me to create something of my own as well.
"As lovely and satisfying as they are to watch or play with, perhaps the best thing about them is that, far from turning us into passive voyeurs, the panoply of apps they support can unleash our own creativity to produce our own works of beauty." shares the article.
So here's a snippet of the list that includes some of my favorite apps:
Brushes 3
This drawing and painting tool has got to be the most celebrated art app, famously a favorite of painter David Hockney. It’s even been used by Jorge Colombo to design a New Yorker cover. It’s free to download, although the Layers upgrade costs $2.99 if you feel like going all out when you paint your masterpiece.
Procreate
Be fruitful and multiply your creativity with this sketching and painting app for the iPad from Savage Interactive, named one of TechCrunch’s top 20 apps of 2011. It costs $1.99 and is a versatile illustration tool with 45 different brushes.
ArtNear
Wondering what artwork there is to see in your neighborhood? The free iPhone and iPod app known as artnear lists galleries and museums near you, with information on venues and artists as well as an event calendar and a bookmark list for your favorites. It came off the market after gaining some popularity, but is being re-released by new developers soon.
Auryn Ink
For a more impressionistic look, try Auryn Ink, the watercolor-simulating app from the good folks at Auryn Inc. See what they did there? It costs $3.99 and was named one of the 7 Most Innovative Apps of 2010 by Fast Company.
Art
That’s right, just Art, as in Art History. This 99-cent app is a browsable database of the great artists, complete with biographies and high-quality images of their paintings. There’s even a parental control setting so you can protect your kids from those “naughty” masterpieces. Or just chill out a bit. After all, it’s Art.
