At first it might look like Pinterest but if you look closely you'll realize that whatever you are seeing is all about sports- images and videos. Sportipin lets you pin all sports images or videos that you want to share with the users.
You can pin images or videos from other websites or directly upload them to your account. It's a free website, you just have to sign-up and just start pinning all that you want to share with the users. You can organize your boards, and save images or videos. Even if in future the source website deletes a particular content you have it saved on your board. You can comment, like, follow or repin the content you like.
Think of Sportipin as your sports scrapbook. Sportipin's launch was aligned with the inaugural of the 2012 Olympics. Read on to know more about Sportipin in our exclusive interview with Sportpin's CEO Paris Grey.
1. Paris please tells us something about yourself and the work that you do.
Paris is a young entrepreneur who has been in the internet space for quite some time now. Sportipin is my first startup to show up on the market and is an idea I’m so much passionate about.
2. What motivated you to start Sportipin and why did you feel the need to create it?
I am a true sports guy and I always find myself taking images whenever am at the stadium or any sport event, but I always desired one place or a single platform where I can share all the images I took and also get to see what other sports funs take. It was at one of such occasions, almost a year ago when I had the idea to see something like this happen.
3. How is Sportipin different from let’s say creating different boards on Pinterest for each sport or event and pinning to those boards? What differentiates Sportipin from Pinterest?
Even though Sportipin is very similar in design and workflow to Pinterest and other pinning platforms out there, Sportipin is focused on only sports fanatics. Sports fans are much more dedicated to their passions and it’s time for such a platform exclusive to sports. With Sports pin users sports board becomes their sports timeline; where they can re-live past events in there just by going through photos and videos.
4. We feel that the idea to launch the site along with the Olympics was fantastic. How did you promote the site and what has been the kind of response so far? What’s your take on word-of-mouth promotion?
So far promotion of Sportipin has been by word-of-mouth through some few early adopters and friends. We are gradually seeing a growth in user engagement on the platform. With most users enjoying what they see and being able to follow up with moments they missed during events. Gradually we are opening it up to events that are happening with the most current, being the English Premier League just after the Olympics.
5. What other entrepreneurs and or businesses do you look up to for inspiration? If there was one person you could onboard to Sportipin who would it be?
There are a lot of entrepreneurs I have always looked up to for inspiration, and is not about their ability to be successful but to me is about the change the bring and the impact it makes in our lives. One of such person is Sean Parker.
6. What are the future plans for Sportipin? Do you plan to add any new functionality to the present setup?
Sportipin is still young and we have a lot of plans coming up, our iPhone, iPad and andriod version is still in development mode and will be available to the general public very soon. This will make it very seamless for users to capture moments as the action goes on. We are also integrating with Instagram and foursquare to make it more fun for users.
7. What advice would you like to give to future start-ups, from the lessons you learnt in the process of creating Sportipin?
For advice I will say, start-up guys like me should see the journey as a rough one, what you need the most is a world changing Idea, a good team and a great execution strategy, but also be very flexible and ready to pivot when necessary.
Thank you Paris for taking out the time and doing this interview with us. We wish you and Sportipin the very best for the future.
