Users will now be able to integrate Facebook's social features with WordPress. "The plugin was built by Facebook engineers in collaboration with open source partners, and makes it simple for anyone to make their WordPress site more social – no coding required. The plugin will also work on mobile and support internationalization." announced Matt Kelly on Facebook blog.
Here are the social plugins that are available as WordpPress widgets:
- Activity Feed: Any activity by readers on the site, such as comments or likes, will be visible to their friends.
- Customization: WordPress users will be able to customize Like, Subscribe and Send buttons.
- Comments: Readers will be able to comment, as well as post it back to Facebook. "The plugin also features automatic SEO support for Facebook Comments, so search engines can index them to improve your site’s visibility." shares Facebook.
- Recommendations: Readers will also get recommendations on WP sites, they will also have the option to display the content they are reading on their timeline.
Not only will this hugely benefit WP users, but also play a major role in spreading even more Facebook widgets across the web and of course, direct more users to Facebook.
Approximately 17% of web content comes from WordPress, and as per Facebook's announcement, it attracts 600 million unique visitors every month.
It only makes sense for Facebook to join forces with one of largest blogging platforms. Websites like TechCrunch and TheNextWeb have already started using this plugin.
But it would've made a lot of sense to integrate Blogger with Facebook as well, but then Facebook and Google have never gotten along. Imagine the Internet if they did!
