Evernote, the popular note-taking app for desktop and mobile platforms, got a big facelift last week with new features and bug fixes for its Windows and Android clients.

Evernote allows you to sync your notes across multiple devices. The app goes beyond just note taking; capture photos, create to-do lists, and record voice reminders, all of which are searchable allowing you to find what you need quickly. The app is available on Windows and Mac computers as well as iPhone, iPad, Android, BlackBerry, Palm WebOS, and Windows Phone.

So what did the recent improvements bring to the already feature-packed table?

Evernote Windows Enhancements

This Evernote for Windows release marks version 4.5.3, which packs in a number of new features centered on PDF functionality:
  • Searchable PDFs: You can now search inside of a scanned PDF within Evernote; also use CTRL+F to search within the PDF.
  • Moveable PDFs: Now you are able to drag a PDF out of Evernote into other apps or onto your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste: Copy and paste text from a PDF in Evernote to any application on your computer.

Evernote for Android Enhancements

The Evernote for Android update is a significant one, bringing three new features:
  • Auto-titles: Evernote now creates a title for untitled documents based on the content of the note and the time it was created. This is great for the quick voice memos and image notes Evernote is known for.
  • Improved Image Layout: Snapshots within notes now have padding around them, making notes with several images easier to view. Tap an image to view it full screen and press and hold to edit the image in Evernote’s sister app, Skitch.
  • Save Anytime: Now you can save drafts of your notes before synching them with all of your devices. When you’re ready to sync, simply press the done button.

Besides the new features, the updates also boast several bug fixes and reliability improvements, including increased note-saving time.

Having downloaded the updated apps myself, I’m pleased with the new features. The PDF functionality in the Windows version is seamless and only adds to the already robust features Evernote has to offer. Additionally, the Android version of Evernote is certainly more aesthetically pleasing with the improved image layout. The auto-titles feature is a good idea in theory but often doesn’t work as well as it was intended.

These recent updates continue to prove Evernote’s longevity in the app world. Besides being named one of the New York Times ‘Top 10 Must-Have Apps,” Evernote has over 21 million users, only proving Evernote’s usefulness and relevance to today’s consumer.
