If you follow me on Twitter, Google+ or Linkedin, you know that I frequently blog about SEO, social media marketing, online reputation management and various other digital marketing topics. I am going to leave all of that behind in this post and share with you some advice that is applicable to any industry or in general, any personal goals you may have for yourself. Whether you are launching a new online store, building a social media presence, setting financial goals or creating a name for yourself within your industry, establish goals early on and develop a means of reaching those goals. After you set goals, create a path to get you there and GET STUFF DONE!

Set Goals for Yourself

Whether it’s a personal goal or a business related goal, establish these early and revisit them often. Without goals in mind, it is easy to stray off path, be influenced by others and eventually, lose sight of what you originally sought out to do. Without a goal, what exactly are you trying to accomplish? Social media marketing is a perfect example of why goals are important. I have had the pleasure of working both on the agency end of things at Mainstreethost and more recently, handling our own marketing. I have seen my fair share of business owners, marketers and so called social media experts attempt to dive into social media without setting goals. I have also made similar mistakes in my in-house role but quickly came to the realization that without setting goals ahead of time, you are ultimately selling yourself short. Set yourself short term and long term goals. Sticking to social media marketing, this could include a number of fans you are shooting to obtain, contests that you plan on running or how you plan on managing your community, comments, etc. Creating predefined goals and procedures will help ensure you are running as smoothly as possible throughout the duration of your social media campaign or other business and personal goals.

Create a Clear Path to Reach Your Goals

Once you define your goals, create a path that is going to get you there. This could be as simple as laying out a schedule of tasks that must be completed in order to reach your goals and could get as complicated as needing to develop teams to fulfill certain functions. Create your path, but more importantly, stick to your schedule and produce. This takes me to my next point.

Get Shit Done

Brainstorm, theorize and talk about what you want to do but at the end of the day, you have to get things done and have something to show for it. If it’s a social media campaign, there have to be deliverables in place so you can ultimately measure your success and determine whether or not your goals were realistic and how well you stuck to following your path to get you there. Too many times, SEO’s, social media marketers and web developers talk a big game and have the knowledge to back it up but simply don’t deliver. Put your ideas to work.

In Conclusion

To sum it all up, I hope you find this post useful and at the very least, realize the importance of setting goals, creating paths to reach them and ultimately, getting stuff done. This is easily relatable to the digital marketing industry but can be applied to any business or personal goals.

When it comes to delivering results, where do you look for inspiration and what methods have you put in place to ensure goals are met?
