Xu, for this project, draws his inspiration from visits to tobacco farms, warehouses, and cigarette factories in Virginia. 'Xu Bing's Tobacco Project explores the production and culture of tobacco as seen through the eyes of one of China’s most innovative contemporary artists', as described on VMFA's website.
It weighs 440 pounds and said to be one of the largest tobacco-inspired art installations ever. The rug will be exhibited at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts till December 4, 2011. This is not the first time when Xu has used tobacco as an artistic medium but this is the third one in the series. The first two ones happened in Durham followed by Shanghai.
