The Web Is What You Make Of It

Posted: 10/17/2011

Other than Facebooking, Tweeting, chatting, sharing viral videos, liking lame images and sneakingly checking out porn, there is a lot more that you can do with the World Wide Web. Something that leverages the ever-growing power of the web to make a difference in this world or even in your own life for that matter.

“The Web Is What You Make Of It” is one such campaign by Google Chrome that highlights some of the most amazing projects across the web. They acknowledge and share creative things that people do using the web. Because you see, the web is what you make of it.

It is an interesting campaign where Google is not only sharing some wonderful stories, but also indirectly demonstrating how one can use those numerous products by Google to make something memorable and amazing. Combination of products like Gmail, YouTube, Picasa, Blogger, Google Maps, etc. etc. can take your creativity to a different level and this is what 'The Web Is What You Make Of It' is all about.

One of my favorites is this video by a father who has used the web to capture and save those beautiful moments of his daughter right from the day she was born so that he can relive those memories with her when she grows up.

It Gets Better is another campaign that can touch your heart. A project that has united people from all over the world to take a pledge to support and respect lesbians, gays, bisexuals, trans and other bullied teens. A movement to let them know that, “It Gets Better”. People from all walks of life have submitted a video with a heart warming or motivating message that lift up a demoralized spirit.

Check out this inspiring video where Dan Savage has used the power of web to make a difference in this world.

'The web is what you make of it” also features a project called “The Johnny Cash Project”, it is a tribute to the legend Johnny Cash. A collective project where Johnny Cash fans from all over the globe come together to create a music video 'There Ain't No Grave”. Anyone can create a illustration (using various tools from the website) of Johnny Cash which is added to this video; each unique portrait finds a place in the video. With so many contributions, this video continues to grow and transform...since virtually it is never the same video again. Have a look:

The Web Is What You Make Of It also features Lady Gaga's attempt to use the web to connect with her fans all over the world and talk to them directly. It also features the widespread phenomena of Angry Birds and an inspiring story of a young couple in Austin, who have smartly used the power of web for their successfull Frank Restaurant.

Visit Google Chrome's YouTube channel to check out all these stories. And don't forget...The web is what you make of it...so next time when you log in to Facebook, try to find some time to do something creative and productive.
