Recently, when Facebook brought in some major changes, all of us accused Facebook of blindly copying Google Plus interface. And if you are one of those who has accepted the inevitable change, don't get too comfortable yet...there's more to come.
Last week Mark Zuckerberg announced a major overhaul in Facebook, apart from the current changes introduced recently. Facebook will be releasing a whole new look in the coming week. You can call it an online scrapbook of your social life.
This new design will show everyone (in your friends' list of course) everything that you've been doing on Facebook since the day you joined. And not only this, you can see anything and everything that happened between the day you were born and till date; if that has been updated in Facebook in some way or the other.
The new look includes a year column on the right side with displaying years between your birthday till today.
Suppose, you click on 1987, you will be able to see your friends who were born in that year, married or perhaps graduated....provided these details are updated on Facebook.
You can see, who all joined Facebook on what date, on what date you became friends with someone, when you joined a particular group or liked a page. Anything and everything that you've done can easily be viewed. Facebook will soon become a stalker's paradise...if you are not very careful about your privacy settings.
“Facebook automatically adds photos, status updates and life events from your Facebook history to your timeline, but you can also add photos and content from you past to fill out the “Way Back” section. In his demo, Zuckerberg showed how to add a baby picture to the beginning of your timeline.” reports Mashable.
Let's have more detailed look:
Activity Log:
A place where you can see all your posts, updates, activities from today back to the beginning. These activities are organized date wise, making it easier for you to relive your good old Facebook days. It also gives you the option to remove specific activities from your timeline. You can also choose to 'star' some of your activities and they will be 'featured in your timeline'.
Please note: This is a private resource and is meant for your eyes only.
Top Stories:
You will be able to see all your top photos, stories and life events, from the little things you do each day to your most important moments. You can scroll back to the beginning or jump to a specific time by clicking the dates along the right side of your timeline.
A Star And A Pencil:
If you hover your mouse on any update in your timeline, you will be able to see two boxes on the top right. One is a 'Star' which lets you feature that update in your timeline, the other is a 'Pencil' that lets you edit or remove a post from your timeline.
Cover Photo:
This is one of my favorite features in the new design. It is a prominent image that is displayed on top of your profile page, it is different from your display picture. Have a look at Mark's cover photo below:
Status Updates & More:
Currently Facebook has a top bar dedicated for: Update Status, Add Photo/Video and Ask Question.
The new interface lets you Add:
-Life Event: For example, graduation, military service or any other life event accompanied with location, along with one of your friends, with a story and a photo. So basically, you can share everything about important events in your life in detail and more personally. Like when you get married, have a baby or start a company.
-Relationship status: other than single, in a relationship, it's complicated, engaged to and married to. You can:
Add a child
Add a pet
Lost a loved one
or a customized status.
-A new button for your living status:
Moved
Bought a home
Add a roommate
Add a vehicle
Customized
-A new button for your health status:
Broke a bone
Had surgery
Overcame an illness
Customized
-Milestones & Experiences:
Learned a language
Got a license
Traveled...
Achievement or Award
Customized
Badges
The new interface has an option of adding a badge to your site.
Facebook will let you create tiny widget of your profile, page or likes enabling you to add it to your site like, Blogger, Typepad or others.
Photo Badge: that will let you share your Facebook photos on other sites through a widget.
Like Badge: You can also show off your favorite likes (movies, books, pages, sports etc) on your website through a widget.
Facebook Chat From Desktop:
I know how irritating Facebook chat has been lately, but this recent overhaul lets you chat with your Facebook friends, using your operating system's clients like: Pidgin, Adium, iChat etc.
So in a nutshell, Facebook will know more about you than your better half. Having said that, I think I am beginning to like these changes, perhaps because I didn't like the idea of Facebook copying other websites' ideas and style. It has always had its own identity, and this new design clearly reflects that. What do you say?
