Three New Yorkers got together to create an industry where they can craft witty, mysterious, engaging, fun, personalized and unforgettable surprise experiences. Kat Dudina, Tania Luna and Maya Gilbert launched SurpriseIndustries.com in June'08 with a passion to help others experience the unexpected.
Their mission is to "inspire a shift in the way people experience the world. We want to encourage positive risk taking, passionate living, and openness to new experiences."
So be it an ice sculpting class, a romantic dinner in a secret place, an adventure filled day, fire eating, treasure hunt, a mischievous surprise or just a simple lunch surprise for your mom; Surprise Industries thrive on those who are looking for a fun-filled day, unforgettable moments and a good time with their loved ones without any planning. "Unlike stuff, experiences create stories and foster bonding", they say.
Other than crafting surprise experiences for individuals, they also plan events, retreats and adventures for a group of friends, an entire family or co-workers in an office for team building or celebrations. One can also order gifts and rewards for their clients or staff members by simply creating a customized gift certificate.
How It Works
The way they work does complete justice to their name, because its not only the one on the receiving end who gets surprised, even the one who hires Surprise Industry has very little clue of what is to come.
For suppose, you buy their 'Personalized Adventure' service, you will have to fill in a simple form with basic details like your name, address, contact number, number of people involved, budget, date, and goal of your surprise. And thats about it, after this, you will contacted by "An Agent of Surprise" 48 hours prior to your adventure who will gather information about your preferences and craft the adventure accordingly. All you'll get is couple of hints and mysterious clues with a secret address. From there on, who knows how your story unfolds.
I like their idea of Mini Surprises as well. Its an all inclusive $25 package, where all you need to do is fill out a form, providing information like your preferred location, number of attendees, age range and restrictions (allergies or phobias). The surprise will begin two days prior to your preferred date, when you will receive intriguing instructions and clues along with a secret address. You can gift this package to your loved ones or if you're feeling a little too daring, then try this one out for a blind date. ;)
According to Entrepreneur.com: Surprise Industries's "revenue doubled in 2010, and they now receive approximately two private orders a day (averaging $300 to $500) and one corporate order a week (as much as $10,000)."
Currently, only New Yorkers can enjoy their services, Gilbert shares that "our database of surprises is the largest in New York, but we're going after interesting people in all interesting cities."
I personally feel that its an incredibly brilliant idea with a fascinating concept, they do have a long way to go provided their services are as promising as their mission; and we wish all the success to these three adventurous, innovative and inspiring entrepreneurs.
