Billboards and movie posters have life span of a few weeks after which they are destined to end up in a landfill and are accountable for 100 pounds of plastic waste.

Remakes is a company that repurposes these discarded billboards and posters to create placemats; not just any placemat...technologically enhanced mats with QR code and not to mention, that each placemat is one-of-a-kind. Although sets are created from same billboard to bring in certain similarity between them.

"Remakes placemats help preserve our environment and reduce landfill, while bringing an artistic and unique look to your table." describes their Facebook page.

Remakes is developed in collaboration with ViaMaris Partners and designed by Nomi Gerstein. Whats interesting is, that each mat has a logo on it, and its not just any other logo...its QR code with recycle symbol that can be recognized by smartphones.

If you scan this code with your smartphone's QR reader, you phone will instantly display a web page with information on how Remakes produces these placemats and also news, tips and ideas related to the environment.

Collecting these discarded billboards is perhaps the easiest way to acquire raw material for a product, since its all waste and no body really cares about it. "We have established an extensive supply network, sourcing massive PVC billboards from printers and advertisers. These sources are happy to give us the material instead for it to be hauled to landfill." they explain in their Start Some Good page, where they are seeking financial support from backers.
