Google has been fooling users with their witty and at times ridiculously hilarious pranks on April Fools Day for years now. But little did they know that in 2011, the jokes gonna be on them.

Gmail Motion was suppose to be a gag where Google tried to convince everyone of their latest beta version of a technology through which one can translate gestures and body movements into commands and actions on Gmail. 

Many fell for it, but not the folks at ICT (Institute of Creative Technology) MxR Lab who were like, why not?


These are the same folks who created a prototype for World of Warcraft using Microsoft Kinect camera that allowed users to play in full-body mode using a a solution that call FAAST: Flexible Action and Articulated Skeleton Toolkit. 

For Gmail motion, they are calling this solution: SLOOW: Software Library Optimizing Obligatory Waving.
