After 3000 years, umbrella has witnessed an incredible evolution called 'Nubrella'. Nubrella can be defined as a 21st century solution to the unmerciful climatic conditions. It is truly an 'ultimate weather protector' because of the benefits it comes with. It is a substitute to the traditional umbrella that lets you protect yourself better with a aerodynamic oval design plus extended coverage due to which wind now flows over and around the canopy. An easy to use stylish accessory, Nubrella has revolutionized the way you protect yourself from extreme weather conditions.

Alan Kaufman is the creative mind behind this innovative invention. He is the creator and founder of 'Nubrella'. Lets learn more about Alan and his creation in a small interview with him below:

Alan, tell us about your innovative product 'Nubrella'. When did you launch it? What are its features?

Nubrella launched in late 2008 via a simple press release. The original concept behind Nubrella was to design an umbrella that could handle wind. During the design process, we discovered that it could be used hands free and that was further developed. The end result is, it is impossible to invert, keeps the user significantly warmer and doesn't need to be held.

How did you come up with such creative invention? Is there any story behind it?

Yes, I was standing in one of my Cingular Wireless stores in Manhattan in December of 2002. It was a miserable rainy and windy day and I was just watching people struggle with their umbrellas. Out of no where, an image appeared in my head and I went over to a desk and drew it. That is how Nubrella was born.

What are the challenges that you faced while launching the product and starting your business?

Money, Money! After spending a considerable amount designing Nubrella, sourcing a manufacturing partner in China, filing patents and purchasing inventory, the company was out of funding. So it was launched on a press release. Also the timing has been devastating. It was launched during the second recession so trying to sell a $50 umbrella and raise new funding was extremely difficult. I am also the only employee and have done everything by myself including 6 trips to China, all patent and design work, getting a fulfillment partner, handling orders and purchases from factory and so on…

What is your take on E-commerce? What do you think, is it playing a significant role in encouraging more product inventions?

Sure, it allows you to reach people all over the world. Nubrella has received orders from people in 66 countries and all 50 states. All found through the internet.

What is your vision/future goal for 'Nubrella' as a whole?

I am currently working on several new designs. I have learned the real revolutionary breakthrough is Nubrella’s hands-free capability. There are millions who work in inclement weather conditions everyday who can not hold an umbrella. There are millions more who find it a juggling act and very tiresome to hold an umbrella when doing basic activities like; walking the dog, riding a bike, pushing the stroller, carrying groceries, in a wheelchair, at a sports event, standing in line and so on.

The new designs will be worn like a backpack and function like a hood. Many believe these new models will change weather protection forever. The key is Nubrella is not intended to replace people’s existing umbrella but rather be a new line item in their weather protection gear. I surveyed thousands of customers who all agreed they added Nubrella to their regular umbrella because it solves existing problems and for the hands-free technology.

My vision is Nubrella should be in every household just like the umbrella is today. People should have a choice of weather protection devices depending on conditions and needs. If it is blizzard like conditions out people will choose Nubrella or if they have any need to be hands free.

Sounds great! Tell us about your other interests. What is your passion(s)?

Helping the less fortunate….I am anxious to start a program I developed called “the real no child left behind”. I love golf and teaching kids tennis…

Many other business owners would draw inspiration from you? What message do you have for them?

IT TAKES TIME…Nothing happens right away. Unless you are prepared to sacrifice your life, you are up against incredible odds to succeed and understand it could be 5-7 years before you see a return then don’t start. It is incredibly difficult and not for the faint of heart. I would suggest continuing a job while you pursue your new business passion is a must. You also have to be honest with yourself. Prove the concept before you start telling people you have a home run.

Alan, thanks for a great interview. Your invention is superb and it surely has a long way to go. We wish you all the very best!
