Over the last couple of years, Google has looked to revolutionize the online landscape. With the power they have in ranking websites resulting in greater exposure and traffic, we all have to follow their guidelines and march to their beat. This has led to some important changes, one of which is their focus on content and the importance of a business blog.

For logical reasons, a static site isn't seen as particularly helpful by those at Google. Instead, they value websites and businesses that are constantly striving to improve what they offer for their visitors.  Those that are constantly uploading new and unique information for their visitors and looking to actively engage with them.

This where the blog becomes your vehicle for content. By setting up a section of your business site for developing great content, you can fulfill the needs of Google and your visitors in one swoop. What you decide to put in your blog will depend on your type of business but the same rules largely apply to all.

To give you an idea, we'll take a look at our blog efforts and how it features in our online marketing strategy. When it comes to managing your own blog, you can pretty much cover whatever you want as long as it makes for interesting reading, something that your visitors will enjoy and potentially keep them coming back for more.

Company News

First off you can cover anything positive regarding your company; information or events that help to boost your reputation and encourage others to consider your services. For instance, we recently held various fundraising events to help raise funds in support of The Prince's Trust. So we took photos and created videos to document the fun we had in raising money for a worthy local cause, and wrote all about it. This formed a great blog post that not only raised awareness for the local cause but showed our visitors that we are a company that cares and is willing to go the extra mile when it comes to helping people.

Other forms of company news that you can cover include a successful project that you've just completed, a new client that you're proud to work with or a milestone that you've reached as a business. All of these topics are examples of positive news surrounding your business and should be shared with those visiting your site. They not only serve for the reasons of unique content being added to your website but they help to develop trust with the visitor as they understand more of what your business can offer.

Useful Advice

An excellent strategy to engage with your blog visitors is to offer useful advice that is related to your industry. For example, as we are a self storage company, our advice can range from storage tips to reaching out to guidance for developing your home lifestyle; decluttering can lead to organisation and cleanliness. One of our recent blog posts focused on one of the most popular toys of all time, lego. With all its bits and pieces, organisation and storage is key for this children's toy. So we delved into how our visitors could create their very own lego storage table.

We've also blended our advice posts with seasonal trends to show that our information is relevant to the current time of the year. A recent article of ours focused on getting ready for the summer, where we discussed breaking out the summer bedding and more importantly getting the garden ready.

Current Events

Another focus of your blog can be on current events, which shows visitors that you're in touch with what's going on in the world today. This doesn't mean that you blog about anything that's in the news but you can focus on events that affect your industry and simply cover something that your visitors might be interested in.

A recent post of ours covered a local exhibition on wedding dresses that dated back to 1775. Going along with the theme of storage and antique items, we wrote about this exhibition and why our visitors might be interested in attending.

Whatever you choose to write about on your business blog, the key points to remember are that each post should be relevant to your business and should be completely unique content. No shortcuts can be taken when developing a quality content section and always ask yourself whether you'd enjoy reading the article; if the answer is yes, you're on the right track.
