The general public seems to have a handle on securing their computers, but smartphones are another matter. As smartphones evolve, and as our dependency on them evolve, we all must do a better job of keeping our private information, well, private. Whether it's personal emails, bank account information or sensitive work data, use these tips to make sure that your life doesn't end up in the wrong hands. Remember, thieves don't need to physically steal your phone to steal your information.

1) Password Codes and Anti-theft Programs

Most smartphones today come with factory-equipped settings specifically designed to make your phone more secure. Always use a password to lock your phone and be sure to enable any anti-theft application soon after your purchase. This usually includes a GPS function designed to track your phone in case of theft.

2) Dump your Data

Just because you download a lot of data onto your phone doesn't mean you should keep it there. You can backup all your data on your computer and delete it from your phone. Most smartphones enable you to clean your browsing history of sensitive information, which you should do often. Always, ALWAYS log out of websites that are tied to your finances, like your bank account or PayPal. The cleaner you keep your tracks the less that can be used against you.

3) Watch your Networks and Bluetooth

Unsecured Wi-Fi networks are the easiest way for a thief to remotely steal your information. Places like libraries, coffee shops and airplanes all offer Wi-Fi but your phone will be unprotected. Always password-protect your own Wi-Fi networks at home or the office. Be sure to turn off your Bluetooth when you are not using it, as it offers a gateway for thieves. You can also turn off your phone at night to prevent anyone from accessing it while you sleep.

4) Secure Websites and Apps

Never download anything from a website that you do not trust. This includes links randomly sent to you by text or email from your contact list. Never give credit card information on a website you do not trust. Be careful and scrutinize which apps you download. Some apps save specific information, like your location, and you have to be wary of that. While iPhone users have their apps pre-screened, most Android users rely on apps from an open-source market, making their apps more susceptible to viruses. Be sure to check user reviews of apps for any security concerns.

5) Proven Mobile Security

Most standard anti-theft capabilities of your smartphone don't go far enough in making you more secure. For people who value their sensitive data, it would be wise to invest in a find your phone service. This level of security will track your phone in case of theft as well as give you protection from anyone accessing your data. These features can all be accessed through the web and give you that extra shield of protection.

If you're using Android, get a mobile phone tracking software as soon as you can. It helps you keep track of your phone using GPS. Also great for finding your phone if you misplaced it. :p

Thanks for the tips Arnel! It would be a god send for people who tend to leave their phone at odd places :)
