This is a guest post by Convonix, it is an internet marketing firm based in India. It specializes in digital marketing solutions & has a substantial client base in US, UK & India. Undertaking extensive research on search engine trends is an important part of its service offering, and the above article is a part of its initiative to bring out its internal research for the benefit of webmasters worldwide.

Google has almost turned out to be synonymous with the internet these days. In fact, the world’s biggest search engine is now an integral part of our daily work lives, making us say, ‘Google it’ the moment someone wishes to know anything. Be it via blogs, books, videos or through its Adwords, it has made its presence felt the most in all these arenas and rules the roost, when it comes to online search ads spend.

However, various new search engines have come to the fore and can provide streamlined information pretty much like Google. While our absolute dependence on the Mountain View, CA based search giant, makes these other search engines seem obscure, they surely have a healthy chance of outrunning Google in a short period, with the inclination of the user shifting towards privacy and confined information.

5 search engines who can give Google a run for its money in the forthcoming years:

DuckDuckGo:

It is actively campaigning with the tagline ‘Google tracks you, we don’t’, by Gabriel Weinberg who launched DuckDuckGo in the year 2008, & has created quite a stir. In an era where consumers are obsessed with ‘Privacy,’ DuckDuckGo can pave way for success with it promising privacy to its users. The ‘zero click info’ bar in this engine is another special feature that caters to ‘No- prediction’ formula.  Unlike Google, it does not display results until the time you enter the entire search phrase. It also encourages users to create apps that it can use, facilitating others users to search faster & get richer results.

Gibiru:

Gibiru describes itself as an anonymous search engine that adheres to anti- government policing and anti-personalization. Besides, it refrains from geo specific locations and does not allow filtering based on regions and locations. While it uses the conventional Google algorithm, it locks horns with its (Google) privacy policy, as it does not track activities using cookies, the way Google does and provides absolute security to its users.

MillionShort:

MillionShort is one search engine that comes as a relief to those who are in search for substantial websites and not the optimized ones. It is undoubtedly one of the most experimental search engines as it works on a distinct formula where it generally removes the top 1 million searches to offer you information that is not user- specified or popular. Yes, popularity does not always guarantee quality.

Blekko:

The slash tag of Blekko makes it unique where the display will be more accurate and precise to your searches, as it will demand a further description from you after a slash. Besides, human choice and decision influences its rankings. The categorization that it has introduced gives more room for exactness.

Wolfram/Alpha:

Developed to solve Maths problems, this search engine has progressed to be a powerful search engine that caters to computational platform. The modus operandi revolves around providing direct answers to users instead of directing them to sources that can provide answers. It will also notify you about the sources it referred to generate this information along with a PDF file, which can be downloaded.

I'm actually aware of other search engines but I just still prefer Google since it has a lot of features compared to others. I feel that using Google will give more reliable information and more results. Anyway, I hope they could be on the level of Google too.
